Tony Fernandez in Critical Condition

Unfortunate news struck baseball headlines today, with close friends confirming through Global News that Tony Fernandez is in critical condition. This follows a significant kidney issue. Rob Leth spoke with reporters from Global News on February 1st regarding the unexpected health of Fernandez, noting that the infamous Toronto Blue Jays infielder from the Dominican Republic wouldn’t most likely recover. This follows after an additional kidney-related issue throughout 2017, with that issue being Kidney Polycystic Disease. It wasn’t expected that Tony would live past this experience, as infections drastically spread throughout the body with this disease. PKD causes for waste products to filter into the blood, prompting issues like Kidney Failure or life-threatening heart attacks. Rob Leth didn’t provide details regarding where Tony Fernandez is being hospitalized, as to avoid any potential hysterical fans.

Tony Fernandes is the all-time leader for played games with the Toronto Blue Jays. He reached 1450 official matches with the TBJs, acquiring more than 1500 Batting Hits. The offensive and defensive WAR for Fernandes was 37.5 to 12.4 respectively. Throughout his professional career, this legend didn’t always play with the Toronto Blue Jays. Tony Fernandes left this organization three separate occasions, with his longest stint being four seasons between 1986-89. Additional teams included the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds and the San Pedro de Macoris. His most notable victory was acquiring the 1993 World Series Championship with the Toronto Blue Jays.

It wouldn’t be until 2001 that Tony Fernandez would retire. However, he remained prevalent with Major League Baseball by continuously appearing as a television host. Unfortunately, after entering the critical condition stake with Polycystic Kidney Disease, it’s unlikely that Tony Fernandez will recover and that he’ll pass away in the following days.

Hall of Fame Introduction

Tony Fernandez is inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. However, Major League Baseball supporters are beginning to demand that Tony Fernandez be entered into the MLB Hall of Fame. Shockingly, this infamous baseball athlete hasn’t already been inducted into this elite list. Notably when individuals like Edgar Martinez, Mariano Rivera, Mike Mussina and Roy Halladay are being inducted during 2020. Tony Fernandez rivals all these players in terms of skillsets. Unfortunately, executives controlling the MLB Hall of Fame haven’t provided any confirmation that Tony Fernandez will be inducted. This is shocking considering it’d be the perfect way to honour his legacy after his inevitable passing.
