Hamas

Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist political and militant organization that was founded in 1987 during the First Intifada, which was a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation. The name “Hamas” is an acronym derived from the Arabic phrase “Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya,” which translates to “Islamic Resistance Movement.”

The organization has a dual structure consisting of a political wing that engages in governance and social services, and a military wing known as the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, which engages in armed resistance against Israel. Hamas governs the Gaza Strip after winning a majority in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections and has been involved in numerous conflicts with Israel. The group’s charter originally called for the establishment of an Islamic state in all of historical Palestine, but over time, it has indicated some willingness to accept a Palestinian state alongside Israel under certain conditions.

Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the United States and the European Union, due to its use of violence against civilians and its attacks targeting Israeli citizens.
